The Smallest Air Fryers: Best Picks for One or Two People
Most air-fryer guides assume you're feeding a family. If it's just you — or you and one other person, or a kitchen the size of a closet — here's the honest case for going small.

Air-fryer buying advice has a blind spot: it assumes a family. Every "best of" list is ranked by how much food fits, as if more is always better. But if you're cooking for one — or two, or you're in a dorm, a studio, an RV, an office kitchen — a giant basket isn't a feature. It's a thing you now have to store, preheat, and clean to crisp a single serving. Small isn't the compromise here. Small is the right answer.
Why a compact machine actually wins for one or two
It fits a real kitchen. A 2-quart machine is roughly the footprint of a coffee maker. It lives on the counter without a negotiation, or tucks in a cabinet without a fight.
It heats — and cleans — faster. Less cavity means less air to bring up to temperature and less surface to wash. For a weeknight portion, a big fryer is just more machine standing between you and dinner.
It's the cheapest way to try air frying at all. A compact unit costs about what a nice dinner out does. If it turns out you air-fry everything, you'll know within a month and can size up with zero regret. If it turns out you don't, you're out very little.
The 2.1-quart Cosori mini is the one we recommend for this: it's quiet (genuinely — under 48 dB), it's light enough to move with one hand, and it does the four things a small household actually wants — air fry, roast, bake, reheat — without a preset menu you'll never scroll through.
Be honest about the ceiling
A compact basket cooks a portion or two. That's the deal, and it's fine — until it isn't. You'll feel the wall in three places:
- Anything that needs a single layer. Fries, wings, tofu, Brussels sprouts — crisping depends on not crowding the basket. In a small machine that means two batches once you're past one or two servings.
- Whole cuts. A 2-quart basket won't take a whole cut-up chicken or a big salmon fillet comfortably.
- Cooking for four regularly. If more than two of you eat most nights, the batches add up fast and the small machine stops saving you time.
If you nodded at any of those, size up now and skip the regret — the 5.8-quart Cosori is the natural step and our all-purpose pick. Feeding a whole family or juggling two meals at once puts you into different territory entirely; that's the one-basket-or-two decision.
The one-line version
Cooking for one or two, tight on space, or just testing the waters? Buy small and buy cheap — the compact machine is the smart move, not the sacrifice. Not sure which size class you're in at all? Start with how to choose your first air fryer.
