Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
The air fryer makes a shockingly good grilled cheese — evenly golden both sides at once, molten middle, no flipping anxiety and no babysitting a pan.

The stovetop grilled cheese has a failure mode everyone knows: one side mahogany, the other pale, the cook flipping anxiously while the kitchen fills with the smell of butter one minute from burnt. It's a two-minute dish that demands your full attention for all of those minutes.
The air fryer removes the attention tax. Heat hits both faces of the sandwich at once — the element from above, circulated air below — so it browns evenly on a timer while you do anything else. One unhurried flip halfway, not because the bottom is burning but because the geometry says so. For feeding several children in sequence, or making lunch while a toddler negotiates something at your knee, this is genuinely the better tool, not a gimmick.
The rules that matter are the same ones the pan taught: butter to the edges, sturdy bread, and cheese that actually melts. Pre-shredded bags are coated in anti-caking starch and melt grudgingly — slice off the block for the difference you can stretch. One honest warning: if your machine's fan is fierce, a light sandwich can shift in the basket. A toothpick through the middle for the first four minutes settles it, and remembering to remove it is part of the recipe.
Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
13m · Serves 2 · Easy · Cosori 5.8QT
Ingredients
- 4 slicessandwich bread — sturdy white or sourdough — thin bread collapses
- 2 tbspbutter — softened, not melted
- 4 slicescheddar — or 3 tbsp shredded per sandwich; a mix of cheddar and low-moisture mozzarella pulls best
- 1 tspDijon mustard — optional, spread inside for the grown-up version
Method
- 01
Butter one side of every slice of bread, edge to edge — bare corners burn instead of browning. Build the sandwiches butter-side out, cheese (and Dijon, if using) inside.
- 02
Air fry at 360°F for 4 minutes. The top element browns the upward face while the circulating air sets the bottom — this is why there's no sad pale side.
- 03
Flip with tongs — the sandwich will have set enough to hold together — and give it 3–4 more minutes, until both faces are deep golden and the cheese is visibly molten at the seams.
- 04
Rest one full minute before cutting. The interior is lava; the minute also lets the cheese set from liquid to stretchy, which is the pull you're after.

Common questions
- How long do you cook grilled cheese in the air fryer and at what temp?
- Air fry at 360°F for 4 minutes, flip with tongs, then give it 3–4 more minutes until both faces are deep golden and the cheese is molten at the seams. Rest one full minute before cutting — the interior is lava.
- Do you flip grilled cheese in the air fryer?
- Yes, once. The top element browns the upward face while circulating air sets the bottom, but a single flip at the 4-minute mark gets both faces evenly golden. By then the sandwich has set enough to hold together for the flip.
- How do you keep grilled cheese from flying around in the air fryer?
- If your machine's fan is fierce, a light sandwich can shift. Stick a toothpick through the middle for the first 4 minutes to hold it down — and remember to remove it before serving, which is part of the recipe.
- What's the best cheese and bread for air fryer grilled cheese?
- Use sturdy white or sourdough — thin bread collapses — and cheese that actually melts. Slice cheddar (a mix with low-moisture mozzarella pulls best) off the block; pre-shredded bags are coated in anti-caking starch and melt grudgingly. Butter the bread edge to edge, butter-side out.
